MARCOGAZ holds two successful Tech Forums on LNG Quality and Methane Emissions Regulation

16 June 2025 | News

MARCOGAZ hosted two well-attended Tech Forums over May and June 2025, bringing together industry experts to discuss key developments in LNG quality and methane emissions regulation. Both events were opened by MARCOGAZ President Alexander Schwanzer, who emphasized the association’s commitment to technical excellence and sustainability in the gas sector.

LNG Quality: 20 May 2025

The first webinar focused on the quality of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), introducing MARCOGAZ’s latest publication: “Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Quality Database.” In response to the absence of a public reference source, MARCOGAZ compiled and shared quality data sourced from its member companies operating LNG terminals.

The database includes vital parameters such as composition, calorific value, Wobbe index, relative density, and Methane number — all recorded under ISO conditions and reflecting LNG quality upon arrival in Europe. The initiative aims to support the safe and efficient design of industrial gas appliances across diverse markets, where gas quality can significantly impact performance and safety.

Speakers Jose A. Lana, Joerg Leicher, and Frederic Vulovic explored how LNG quality variations influence appliance design and discussed how the data can help enhance system compatibility and resilience in the face of changing gas imports.

Guidance on the EU Methane Emissions Reduction Regulation: 12 June 2025

The second Tech Forum addressed the European Union’s new regulation on methane emissions reduction, presenting MARCOGAZ’s guidance on its implementation. The regulation is a landmark step in global climate policy, introducing stringent Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) requirements and demanding more accurate emissions quantification. The first independently verified reports under the new MRV framework are due by February 2027.

The session provided practical insights into the regulation’s application in the midstream and downstream sectors and highlighted current global strategies for methane mitigation. Speakers Tomás Bredariol, Ronald Kenter, Emiel Wehkamp, Liliane Wietzerbin, and Pascal Alas emphasized the importance of innovation and cross-sector collaboration in achieving the regulation’s ambitious targets.

With methane recognized as a critical climate pollutant, the webinar reinforced the need for robust data, advanced detection technologies, and harmonized approaches across the energy value chain.

Both webinars received high levels of participation and positive feedback from attendees across the gas sector, underlining the relevance of the topics and the value of MARCOGAZ’s technical contributions. As the gas industry evolves to meet climate and energy goals, MARCOGAZ continues to play a vital role in facilitating informed dialogue and sharing expert knowledge across Europe and beyond.
