Response to the public consultation of the European Commission on the Heating and Cooling Strategy

In its response to the European Commission’s consultation on the Heating and Cooling Strategy, MARCOGAZ underlines the importance of a technology neutral approach to ensure an efficient and affordable energy transition.

The paper highlights that while electric heat pumps and district heating are valid solutions, their benefits should be assessed in the context of local conditions, infrastructure, and overall system costs. MARCOGAZ stresses that renewable and low carbon gases such as biomethane, hydrogen and gas blends can provide immediate, scalable and cost effective decarbonisation options for the heating sector, supporting EU climate objectives while maintaining system integrity and affordability for consumers.

The document calls for diversified and complementary solutions, including hybrid heat pumps and high efficiency boilers, to enhance flexibility, ensure resilience and avoid energy poverty, while making use of Europe’s existing gas infrastructure for a smoother and faster transition.
